The Whistle Blowing Policy

“A whistle blower as defined by this policy is an employee of  and organization who reports an activity that he/she considers to be illegal or dishonest to one or more of the parties specified in this Policy”. (SHRM, 2016)

When operating in the modern organization context it is inevitable to manage the employees’ needs and organizational affairs as well. And a separate Human Recourse Department or a dedicated personal is appointed specially to take care of these affairs.

One of the main issue the HR department or personal come across is dealing with frauds and dishonest actions which go against the company policies and procedures. The complains against these issues may diverse from the janitor to senior level management and depending on that the actions to be taken also will be varying.

Sometimes organizations maybe facing a situation where the person who is involved in the company fraud or misbehaving might be a in the top management or someone who is directly involved in company’s growth and prosperity. In this scenario anyone will be have a reluctance to forge a complaint against them.

Given this situation anyone can follow the whistle blowing policy. As a third party the employers can forge the complaint against the mischiefs happening. Therefore the complainer will be safeguarding themselves and an independent council or director can take actions against the given issues.

But there are organizations which follow the method of grievances which has a rule book in the company to take actions against any rule breakings. The actions taken against the employee will be the same according to the company irrespective of management grades. But due to the management biasness in handling grievances the whistle blowing policy comes into effect.

In whistle blowing policy there are no pre-defined penalties similar to grievances, in this scenario the issue will handled on a case by case basis by a committee or individual appointed by the Chairman or Board of Directors. When the misconduct is proved to the committee or the individual who is responsible for whistle blowing policy he/she may declare the penalties according to the situation.
